Casablanca revisited

Casablanca revisited

We passed through Casablanca today, and it was valuable to get a second impression, as the first visit was pretty uninspiring. The place still doesn’t rival Marrakech, but does have some interest after all. The square of pigeons … but the mosque, built in 1987 taking 6 years, is awe inspiring and enormous yet simple. The Corniche, the waterfront, is a mixture of decay and Atlantic grandeur. Faded glory indeed, I’d love to have seen in the 1930’s & 30’s.

The intricacy of the tiles, the carvings, the marble, the mosque was just beautiful. Pretty much 100% Moroccan materials and 100% Moroccan labour , it’s an unusual achievement given it’s only 50 years old.

Now in Rabat for a day.
