Chafchauen, the blue city

Chafchauen, the blue city

I’ll let the photographs do the talking, it’s a beautiful place with a slow pace. This is probably helped by the copious marijuana grown and dealt here, which made it a hippy heaven before it became an Instagram hotspot ! There’s some interesting smells wafting around still.

Doors and alleyways of shades of blue; the indigo was originally added as a preventative for mould as its antibacterial, but as the city became famous as the ‘ blue city’ it’s become a trademark and the local business owners keep adding to the blue.

It’s pre tourist season, so while the city is not empty it’s not packed either. There’s a lovely peace and feeling of space at the moment. In a few weeks time it’ll be packed and I’d much rather have the cool evenings with cold nights than crowds of people.

There just isn’t as much hassle as I’d expected. While there are guys touting for their shops and cafes, a cheerful ‘ no thanks’ is well accepted.

The food … amazing, tonight a goat tagine after the usual complimentary eggplant spread and fresh bread and olives. Makes up for the largely alcohol-free city and call to prayers 5 times a day, when the food is so good and so simple.

And sunset over the city tonight.
