The next goal ?

The next goal ?

I walked the Three Capes track in Tasmania in 2017, and it was the last long multi day hike I managed before my walking started to deteriorate seriously. A few photographs below of a truly beautiful part of the world, and I always felt that the walk finished that part of my life on a high note. Fast forward 7 years, and I am in training to complete that walk again, in January 2025. This is going to be a challenge, as my hip swing and leg drop is still very evident after a very few miles of walking and does force a stop; initially short recovery pauses then a complete stop for the day. The limit, once reached, means I would trip and fall risking whatever injuries that could cause, hence it’s a hard limit to what I can achieve and distances walk.

That limit, however, has been extending noticeably over the last years, and this last weekend I walked well over 10,000 steps every day for a long weekend in Melbourne. So training and exercises does result in slow, steady improvement which is why I need to embark on this program of gradually increasing walks over the next months. The goal of completing the Three Capes again is motivation enough.

I mentioned Melbourne for the weekend, a lovely big city short break of

  • AFL ( Australian Rules Football) at an iconic stadium in Melbourne watching Andy’s team lose dramatically to my team,
  • A lego exhibition which was bright and joyous, while not trivial. It was an immersive experience, with sound and light projections highlighting the sculptures, and the sculptor had left some thought provoking questions/ quotations by many of the pieces. Most of all, it was fun
  • great food, wine and cocktails in a vibrant city

Today’s walk, around 4.5km of gravel track, with a short but very steep incline at the end. A short water break then we faced the steep descent and easy stroll back to the car. I am very happy with that as the start of real walking, on rough ground.
