Lessons learned

Lessons learned

I woke up this morning, on Varanus Island, in an absolute panic as I thought I’d made a really basic error in a calculation. As it’s a calculation allowing the plant to start up, the consequences could have been immense. A quick check, and I had got the workings correct so my panic subsided.

I can’t say ‘lesson learned’ in truth, more a reminder that it’s always worth stepping back and taking time to reflect even if briefly.

There’s also a reflection on openly and honestly acknowledging an error, as this is what I would have needed to do and very rapidly, considering the consequences had my calculation been in error. For plant safety, openness and honesty in a very timely manner would have been required.

The light and colours here at dusk and dawn are magical. Last night, at end of the shutdown, the catering staff put on a food street market. There were stalls with American, German and Spanish food and music pumping out as we ate watching the sunset. Lots of happy people eating good food, people who have been so welcoming and friendly to an office engineer during a high stress period of time.

Happy to be going home but this is a good place for me.
