Port Arthur on a beautiful winter’s day

Port Arthur on a beautiful winter’s day

A sunny cool day, a drive to the sombre and imposing Port Arthur. It’s beautiful here, with a green landscape and harbour that is breathtaking, but a convict penitentiary history of cruelty and deprivation that is impossible to escape. Added to that is the memory of the massacre just over 30 years ago, when 35 people were murdered by a lone gunman. It’s hard to separate the place from its history. I’ll gladly visit, but there’s always an element of paying tribute to the convicts deported for stealing a loaf of bread, and the people shot while on a visit, alongside the beauty and history of the place.

A perfect day of sunshine and no wind, so lucky. Thanks to Andy for many of the photographs.
